My lady and I did this hike over the past weekend. Most of the streams flow north into Otter Creek. Our group had 4 adults and 4 kids ages with range of ages from 5-9. If you make this hike, be sure to have a vehicle on the other side. The Green Mountain Trail is great for either an overnight backpacking trip or a long and challenging day hike. I’m a beginner biker and would like some feed back. Took our dogs they loved it!! We took the whole family ( three boys). Diverse landscapes- boulders and trees and open space, and when I went, visibility was extremely low which gave it an ethereal feel. The High Falls trail passes through old growth forest, and large hemlock as it winds through the saddle on Shavers Mountain. Beautiful view of the mountains and Shaver Lake from the top. We hiked out to a fabulous campsite by the river about a half mile from the falls and spent the night. Still trying to put together a group of folks to do a night. Elevations range from 1,800 feet to 3,900 feet in Otter Creek so snow is plentiful in the wintertime for winter recreation activities like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Travel slow in rocky areas. 1. We parked in a small pullout across the road (N side of the road) from the trail entrance. Wasn’t breathtaking but nothing bad about this trial! Horses and four wheel vehicles are not allowed on the Allegheny Trail.
It’s like going vertical down hill. 16 trails with 9 photos Few bridges are provided at creek crossings and some streams may be difficult to cross during high water events. The trail concludes with a 1.3-mile ascent through thickly wooded brush at the top of Green Mountain. Some parts were sandy and very slippery. Situated between Pocahontas County and Webster County, this wonderfully preserved region covers 35,000 acres of thick forests and is home to over 60 miles of West Virginia hiking trails. At just 10 miles long, the Shavers Mountain Trail is a popular WV Hiking spot, however the trails here are of a higher grade and require more strength than the average trail … Follow the High Falls Trail for 0.2 miles and cross West Fork over a wooden footbridge. In 1.2 miles from the field, arrive at the saddle on Shaver Mountain and the only good campsite on the hike (no water). We have the cabins reserved again this year (2016) with some friends who we hope will enjoy it as much as we did! The Monongahela National Forest’s Otter Creek Wilderness has many trails, mostly for hiking through the scenic landscape of rhododendron, timber and mosses. Overall great little walk, not difficult at all. Biking is prohibited on the trails, but horses are allowed in some areas. There was also an abundance of blackberries. Beautiful view of the mountains and Shaver Lake from the top. This trail is very easy to do. Follow the blue blazed High Falls trail for 1.1 miles where the trail arrives at the railroad tracks. If it wasn't so far away from home, Id come here every week. Colors indicate trail is missing specified detail.
The Allegheny Trail was West Virginia’s first long distance WV Hiking Trail with over 330 miles maintained and preserved specifically for West Virginia Hiking. The view was nice. Great for kids or in my best friends cases, a hurt leg.
The Otter Creek Wilderness lies in a bowl formed by Shavers Mountain and McGowan Mountain and is located within the Monongahela National Forest. Lots of switchbacks made for a mellow grade otherwise, and we found the elevation summary pretty accurate. The intended direction a trail should be ridden.
We are generally fit but not speed hikers, and we took about 3:30 out/back, and another 45 minutes for lunch at the falls (4.15 total time). That’s why I gave it four stars. With a very gentle grade, hikers can enjoy the stunning scenery and blooming wildflowers each spring and summer.
Definitely recommend hiking shoes, as it is slippery/sandy at a number of parts. Aside from those things, this hike was phenomenal. Good mix of sun and shade. plus a half hour for lunch. Had the hardest time trying to find this trail, my friend and I were walking on a paved road sharing it with cars and eventually found the trail but there was little to no shade! High Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Monongahela, and at an altitude of over 2,800ft, one of the highest. The mountain scenery along this trail is stunning,but be sure to pack a lot of water along with you as there are few mountain rivers and streams along the North Fork Mountain Trail. The Shavers Mountain Spruce-Hemlock Stand is a 68-acre (28 ha) virgin red spruce-hemlock stand, partly within the Otter Creek Wilderness. Do yourself a favor, bring hiking poles. We found/ made a trail near a stream to avoid the OHV trail. We were the only people on the trail the whole time. All residents must have a proper hunting license and all non-residents must have a non-resident hunting license. Connects To. With the day pass we more than enjoyed the time spent at the shaver's lake and kicked off the day with this trail around 10am. In general Shaver's Lake area is a nice and easy 1day investment esp if traveling with younger kids. If you don't bring water there are a few running streams you can fill up and tastes great too. Most of the streams flow north into Otter Creek.
Easy flat trail running above Huntington Lake Rd. Important: Turn right as the blue blazed trail now follows the service road (SR), and DOES NOT cross it.

We have come up here for the last three years to jump off the falls and camp. Green Mountain Trail #130. It is very wet there, making the rocks very slick. Walk the full distance to the road to get in a 3.3 mile hike up and back. Lots of flowers.
